Platinum Safety: Good for Us, Good for You

EGStoltzfus Commercial Construction has once again been rated at the platinum level for safety in the STEP Safety Management system established by Associated Builders and Contractors, the industry trade association.

That’s good news for everybody:

  • For our clients, it reduces the risk of accidents involving their customers, patients, staff, or neighbors.
  • For nearby residents, or even those who simply pass by our construction sites, it shows we follow the highest standards of professionalism in the way we manage our projects and construction sites.
  • For our employees, of course, it shows we have a safety culture and are committed to their well-being.

“There’s nothing more important to us than the safety of our employees, our friends,” said Andy Dula, president of EGStoltzfus Commercial Construction. “At the end of the day, we all want the same thing: to send our employees home in the same condition (or better) than they arrived.”

It’s a major milestone for our safety committee and safety manager, Corey Radzik.

A safety professional for more than a decade, Corey has been with the company for four years. Other members of the safety committee include Matthew Blank, Matthew Stoltzfus, Darren Fisher, Brandon Mays and Tom Malinich.

One of Corey’s key responsibilities is working with EGS trade partners to make sure they follow company policies and procedures. Because we use many of the same trade partners, they almost become an extension of the company, Corey says. He’s encouraged that many subs have begun to develop safety cultures of their own.

“You start getting this mindset of safety going on out there,” he said. “That’s what we want.”

In addition to being chairman of the EGS safety committee, Corey is also chair of the ABC Keystone safety committee, which even includes some competitors. The group discusses new OSHA regulations and new safety processes, and he’s involved some of EGS’s trade partners as well. He is also a member of the Lancaster Safety Council.

“Our safety culture is definitely apparent in our company’s day-to-day operations,” Corey said. “Growing that safety culture has come so naturally in the past four years because of the family, the faith culture that we already have at EGStoltzfus. It has been absolutely awesome.”

In scoring the awards, the STEP program evaluates a company’s safety plan, the past five years of OSHA logs, inspections and citations, and employees’ participation in safety-related events and programs.

A key indicator is the Experience Modification Rate, an insurance-industry metric that measures a company’s safety risk, compared to comparable businesses.

EGS’s EMR rate of .745 indicates that our safety record is 25.5% better than the average company in our category (which would be rated at 1.0). That’s especially important for companies whose insurers require an EMR below .8.

The EMR rate, established by our workers’ compensation insurance company, is a combined rating for EGS commercial and homes divisions.

We were previously named to the platinum level in 2023 and reached the gold level in 2024.
