New Tikka Shack Shows the Promise of Adaptive Reuse

Originally a three-story apartment building with a structural firewall through the center, the new Tikka Shack Indian Grub restaurant in Hershey, PA showed just how challenging adaptive reuse can be. And gave the Remodeling team at EGStoltzfus Commercial Construction a chance to shine.

The owner originally planned to demolish the building, but the Derry Township Downtown Core Design Board denied the request, citing the building’s historic character.

With the help of Hershey architect ThYNK design, EGStoltzfus worked with the owner to retool the plans. And we launched a “surgical demolition and reconstruction” accommodating many unexpected conditions as the project proceeded.

Many times, we had to adapt to the conditions we found in the aging structure. But the team persevered, and the new restaurant quickly because a hit.
